Samsung Releases An Enterprise SSD That Costs About RM40,000

Samsung has released a new product in its enterprise solid state drive family called the PM1633a. What makes this SSD stand out amongst other enterprise SSD in the market, aside from its performance, is its retail price of US$10,000 (about RM40,185) – a price that most general consumers (ourselves included) may not be able to afford.

Of course, paying forty thousand ringgit for an SSD means that one would expect it to come with beefy specs. Fortunately, the Samsung PM1633a SSD does. Samsung’s latest enterprise SSD comes with a 256Gb 48-layer TLC (triple level cell) NAND flash memory along with 16GB of DDR3 SDRAM. When it comes to power consumption, the PM1633a SSD is rated at 11W when under load.

Speed-wise, the Samsung PM1633a is able to churn out both sequential read and write speeds of 1200MBps and 900MBps respectively. Meanwhile, this SSD also boasts an random read and write speed of up to 195,000 IOPS and 31,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second) respectively. The PM1633a SSD will ship in a 2.5-inch form factor.

Now, one might wonder “who in their right mind would spend that much money on a single SSD?”. Well, they are usually bought companies that run huge cloud-based data centres whom are more than capable of investing in expensive enterprise SSDs.

That said, there are other “affordable” variants of the P1633a enterprise SSD available. Samsung has decided to release the SSD in six storage capacities: 480GB, 960GB, 1.92TB, 3.84TB, 7.68TB, and 15.36TB – the latter being the most expensive. According to sources, the 7.68TB variant has gone on sale for a price of US$5,730 (about RM23,000) – imagine what price would the other variants bear.
