Popular tank action simulator World of Tanks might just be the future of the Russian military. Deputy PM Dmitry Rogozin declared that Russia would soon need World of Tanks players shortly after the country revealed plans to build a remote-controlled armoured tank.
Uralvagonzavod company, which makes the T-90 main battle tank, issued a press release that cited plans to modify the existing tank design for remote operation. This would allow the vehicle to be controlled from three to five kilometres away, and keep the operator safely out of the line of fire. Following this, Rogozin took to Twitter to say, “we need no tankers now, we need World of Tanks players.”
Rogozin has long been a supporter of drone technology, going as far as to say that “bespectacled nerds” would completely destroy the forces of “handsome athletes who fight on a lower technological level.”
World of Tanks isn’t exactly the most accurate of tank simulators, often favouring action over realism for gameplay. However, the Russians are not wrong in thinking that the wars of the future will likely be fought through remote controlled machines. Western countries already operate combat drones through consoles that resemble high end gaming rigs.
That being said, we are mostly impressed that a politician is savvy enough to be aware of World of Tanks; although someone should tell him that it doesn’t include modern fighting vehicles.
