APAM BALIK PAKCIK ZUL @ TAMAN MELAWATI

What can RM2 buy you nowadays? Well, it can get you 3 pieces of freshly made apam balik from Pakcik Zul, whose stall can be found at the intersection of Lorong Selangor and Jalan Negara in Taman Melawati.

Pakcik Zul has been selling his apam balik at his current location for the past 8 years. When he first started, he was selling them at RM0.50 per pc, and only increased his prices when the cost of raw ingredients went up in the recent years.
Assisted by his wife, both of them quipped that not many people want to do this kind of “leceh” work anymore. It’s true, and a sad fact – traditional food stalls like Pakcik Zul’s are fast disappearing in KL.

The apam balik here is the thin and crispy type which is also the kind that I prefer. There’s nothing fancy about the pancake’s content, it consists of a sprinkle of crushed peanuts, sugar and a spoonful of sweet corn. Because of the smaller pan size, it takes only a minute or two for the pancakes to cook.

After letting the apam balik rest and cool down for a bit, they are ready to be eaten. The crispy crust lets out a crunchy snap when you bite into it, revealing a balance of sweet and nutty flavor that brings back memories of childhood. And that’s all I ask for.
