Intel pushes into mini desktop market in 2015

Despite weak global PC sales, inexpensive mini desktops are still seeing strong demand from consumers, prompting Intel to strengthen its mini desktop platform R&D and related marketing, according to sources from the upstream supply chain. In addition, Intel is also aggressively promoting its Compute Stick and is aiming to ship 1.2 million units in 2015.

For 2015, Intel has five major product lines for its mini desktop business: Mini ITX-form-factor product, sub-1-liter mini PC, NUC, Mini Lake PC and Compute Stick, to cover demand from different segments.

Currently, Intel is seeing strong demand for mini desktops in Europe, Southeast Asia and Japan. AMD has also been adjusting its product lines to push into the market segment.

The Intel NUC platform released in 2013 has recently started gaining attention from consumers, while the Compute Stick has also started seeing rising sales thanks to growing popularity of smart TV-connected devices such as Apple TV, Chromecast and Chromebox.

Gigabyte Technology, Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) and Zotac have all developed NUC- and mini desktop-based products and are seeing better-than-expected shipments and profits thanks to their high gross margins.

To enhance mini desktops' performance, Intel is also planning to adopt its Core processor into the product line as well as adding functions such as wireless charging, WiDi or True Key.
