Ever since news broke about Nvidia not supporting an SLI setup consisting of more than two GeForce 10 series graphics cards a few months ago, hardcore PC enthusiasts and gamers didn’t take it too lightly. Nvidia rectified the problem by providing users who own more than two GeForce 10 series graphics cards with an “enthusiast key”, which will enable support for a wider SLI configuration – with the old SLI bridge, of course.
Just when Nvidia fans thought the SLI “issue” was resolved, there are now talks about the company not supporting more than a two-way SLI configuration for a majority of older and upcoming games. According to PC Perspective, only programs that support a multi-GPU setup will benefit from a triple or quadruple SLI setup. This means that programs such as 3DMark, Unigine Heaven, and other major benchmarking tools will be some of the very few applications that will support a three or four-way SLI config.
For gamers that have their bank accounts loaded and their eyes set on buying four GTX 1080s expecting to play games at 1000fps, it’s best to reconsider. Meanwhile, to those that’ve already bought more than two GeForce 10 series graphics cards for gaming in a single system… I wish you all the best.
