Also unveiled alongside the Redmi Note 3 is the successor to the original Mi Pad, the aptly named Xiaomi Mi Pad 2. Not only has it gained a full metal chassis, it is also packed with a new processor: an Intel Atom X5-Z8500 quad-core chipset.
That’s right. Instead of a Qualcomm processor (or NVIDIA, like the first Mi Pad), Xiaomi has decided to go with an Intel chipset for the Mi Pad 2. The Atom X5-Z8500 is a 14nm 64-bit quad-core processor clocked at 2.24GHz, which is paired with 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM. Other than that, the Mi Pad 2 also comes in two storage sizes: 16GB and 64GB.
Other specifications of the Mi Pad 2 include a 7.9-inch 2048 x 1536 display (Xiaomi was quick to point out that this tablet has the same resolution as the iPad mini 4), a generous 6,190mAh battery with support for fast charging, 8MP rear and 5MP front-facing cameras, as well as a USB Type-C port.
Compared to its predecessor, the Mi Pad 2 is definitely a more premium tablet. It has a full metal chassis and a slimmer dimension. In fact, measuring at only 6.95m, the Mi Pad 2 is actually 18% thinner than the first Mi Pad. It’s also worth noting that the Mi Pad 2 is 38g lighter despite having a full metal body, but this doesn’t really come as a surprise: the Mi Pad 2 has a smaller 6,190mAh battery, while the original Mi Pad has a 6,700mAh cell.
As this is a Xiaomi product, it’s expected that the Mi Pad 2 will boast a very competitive price tag. Xiaomi’s latest tablet goes for 999 Chinese yuan (about RM660) and 1,299 yuan (approximately RM860) for the 16GB and 64GB models respectively. As usual, local availability of the Mi Pad 2 has yet to be announced, although it will go on sale in China later this week on the 27th of November.
